Was this stupid "decluttering" challenge anyways?!?! Sometimes things are JUST FINE the way they are!! Geez... *whistle* :P
This morning I posted about some organizers I wanted but didn't want to pay $200 for 125 plastic dividers. As awesome as they are, that's too rich for my blood & in order to organize all my fabric, they would probably run me around $1000. *faint*
So hubby & I headed to Home Depot for supplies to make them instead & hopefully save $$ in the process! This is I think only the 2nd time that I've ever been in Home Depot, and I have to tell you, everyone is so helpful & friendly!! I was chatting with the cashier for a few minutes & ended up giving her my business card so she could take a peek at my blog because we were talking about sewing etc and she had asked what I sewed. She was super sweet so told her she could look at my blog if she was curious! :)
Anyways... we did find the corrugated plastic sheets which were on sale for $15.99 each (we grabbed 5). We also grabbed a DeWalt Retractable knife to cut the sheets with (piece of crap..lol! Hubby couldn't get the blade in properly and dropped it IN THE handle, so I'm getting my $16.99 back tomorrow) and a LONG HEAVY METAL ruler to use for measuring & cutting. Our total came to $119.70.
I had FIL pick me up since we needed a pick-up truck to throw them in. When we got home they needed dried off because they blew across my neighbors yard & ended up covered in mud & snow!! LOL!!!
After this was done I grabbed my supplies & started drawing the templates...
Hubby cut one complete sheet for me and is going to do one sheet a day for me on his holidays as I organize my fabric!! Here's part of the first stack...
I've made a very small dent in my fabric so far but am thinking I'm going to have to start fresh as I layered my fabric in 3's mostly but it's going to be a pain if I want the middle fabric on a couple different "bolts". So I'm going to put 2 per sleeve instead...
As you can see I still have a ways to go! But at least it's started!! :)
It's a good amount of work, but in the end we're saving a LOT of money!
Let's compare buying online vs. doing it ourselves.
Buying online:
- 125 sleeves for $200.00 plus shipping.
- ALL the work is done for you.
- Every sleeve is perfectly uniformed size.
- Strong Corrugated plastic.
- Little tabs to tuck your fabric into to start.
- Fast & easy.
Making our own:
- Total supply cost $119.70.
- Sleeves are "close" to size & we made some smaller as well.
- Takes time to draw template & hand cut.
- Strong Corrugated plastic.
- No tabs to tuck fabric in to start (but I definitely didn't think it was hard to roll & pin without the tabs!)
I figured I'd need at least 3-4 sets ($600-$800) to get all my fabric done, minus my Christmas fabric which I'm just going to shove fold perfectly & place in a bin.
Our 'homemade' sleeves will make at *least* 400 sleeves for the total cost of $119.70 compared to 375 sleeves for $600 plus shipping!
I think unless you have lots of $$$ to burn, making your own is clearly the way to go! Plus, I'd rather have more fabric rather than perfectly uniform plastic sleeves. lol! Just sayin'.... ;)
Well, I'm off to roll fabric! Have a great night everyone!
