My asthma has been not so great lately, and even when it's "ok", it's still not "great". It's a rare day that I feel like I'm breathing "normally". 2 days ago I made Namaste gluten free rice buns to eat some eggs on. I ate my eggs & buns then was a little mucousy/coughy during the day, but was breathing "ok" so didn't bother with my inhaler. Fast forward to dinner time, I'm starving so eat a bun alone. Before I'm even done eating it I'm clearing my throat, mucousy, back is starting to hurt, wheezy, etc... So I take my Ventolin & the symptoms clear in a couple of hours.
Next morning I have my coffee with sugar... Again, within minutes I'm mucousy, clearing my throat, etc... Hubby says to me after he notices me clearing my throat & cough "it's happening already!?" He figured since I hadn't eaten anything it was strange... I always tell everyone I'm a non-smoker with the nasty "smokers cough/throat clearing" symptoms. Ugh!! Hate it!
So after googling "asthma & food" I found out that sugar is a "no-no", so I'm dropping sugar in all shapes & forms, starting with my morning coffee. There are foods that aggravate asthma & are more mucous forming than others.
Yesterday eventually I felt better & stuck to a carb-free diet for the day and wouldn't you know, lo & behold, I didn't need my inhaler all day & no nasty symptoms either!
I've decided that I'm going back to a fully Primal diet as per above. I can't keep breathing at 80% capacity just so I can have a few "treats" in my diet. My health means far too much to me!! For this week I will stick to my primal diet! I will be keeping a food journal along the way, then will retest the Namaste mixes, organic brown rice & organic brown rice pasta to see if I notice a difference with it. I love the Namaste mixes so I'm going to be quite sad if I need to give them up completely, but it would be worth it to be inhaler free. I only brought them into my diet in the first place to keep a few extra pounds on my body, but I'd rather breathe well.
When I'm breathing well I have a lot more energy, feel great & actually get stuff accomplished! When my asthma is bothering I'm sluggish & have low energy. It really makes me not nearly as productive as I could be!
So, there you have it! I'm off to drink my black, dairy & sugar free coffee. ;)
Are you following a certain type of diet? Have you cut out certain foods from your diet because of a health condition?
