After finding a great article on "The Importance of a Financial Journal", i've decided that I need to get back on track with keeping a budget journal of my own again. It's really the only way i'm going to stay on track with our budget and manage any type of extra savings. Which means tracking what money goes out, what money comes in, where we saved money, ways to make some extra money, etc...
I've had this planner sitting around for a while and had only used a couple of pages in it, so tore them out and am ready to start fresh! I like how it goes day by day which will make things easier. Today will be day 1, which works well since it starts on Thursday! :) I'll be tracking income in, income out, ways I saved money rather than spending it, etc...
Last week our budget ended up being DOUBLE what I had accounted for. *sigh* Mind you a chunk of that was meds & health related costs, but all the same, it still doubled our spending for the week. Our slush fund is sitting very low right now. After last weeks over-spending, some meds for Mya & Ed, etc.. along with last months expenses (new home security system, hubbys new phone, etc..) we're now sitting at just barely over $1300.00. My hope is to have our slush fund sitting at the minimum of $1K to start out the New Year with, so we need to be very careful through the month with our budget and pray nothing else comes up that we can't cover! While i'm talking about savings here, i'm only $100.00 away from having $5K in our TFSA as well! Yay! I'm quite happy about almost reaching that goal this year!!
In my budget planner today I have 4 entries so far...
- - $46.48 - No Frills (food)
- - $75.89 - Prescriptions for hubby
- Sent in a Blue Cross claim for +$124.03. *will get reimbursed in a couple weeks
- Saved $ by making bread for dinner instead of buying a loaf even though it's been a very busy day
This week our budget is going to be $246.00 for the week after our No Frills spending. I forgot that I also have a pork order coming in this afternoon which will also come out of slush fund. I know I said I was going to post a menu plan, but no time yet. I know tonight will just be "this & that", and tomorrow night will be a beef roast with all the fixin's. I'll have to figure out the rest later on tonight when I have time to think.
Since it's going to be a frigid cold week my plan is to STAY IN and not spend! I'd love to get in 3 'no spend' days this week. Those seem to be few & far between, so i'll make that a goal for myself this week! :)
Well, I have 1/2 hr. before I have to run out and pick up my borrowed kid for a play-date with Maria! Before I go though, a little update: Mya seems to be feeling a little better, she still isn't eating very much, but seems to be snacking ok and her cough isn't nearly as bad as it has been. Hubby seems to be on the mend as well thankfully! Thanks for everyones kind comments & prayers! :)
Ok.. i'm off! Stay warm!!!
Do you keep a "Financial Journal"?
What exactly do you track in it?
