Saturday things...

Weather & Boredom: Happy Saturday! We are currently living in a blizzard of a snow globe world... we have several feet of snow, at least, and we're sitting at a bright & sunny -33c (-27.4F), so to say it's chilly would be a grand understatement. I have *zero* intentions of stepping foot outside this weekend. I have caught a cold and my chest hurts, so staying inside where it's warm & easy to breathe is a good thing!

I'll sit around this weekend doing not much of anything. I'm totally & completely bored but it's far too cold to go anywhere to do anything. I really wish I'd have brought a hand-stitching project or something with me though. I have a couple books to read and that's it. Nothing to work on which I really miss, but such is life.

My awesome sister and brother-in-law stopped by the other night with a huge box of boards games & movie to keep me busy, so that was nice and we've been working our way through those. But I miss being creative more than anything at this point. If it weren't so bitter cold I'd run up to Michaels and find something "creative" to work on until our delayed truck arrives (this Wednesday - I hope!!). However, I feel horrid with this cold and it's too cold so that settles that. Boredom it is!

Health care once again! We have a Dr's appointment on Monday - how freaking *INCREDIBLE* is it that we have a doctor and 24 hour medical care once again!!! Amazing!! Our Dr took us back in 30 seconds when we asked and I'm so grateful to him! He's such a wonderful Dr so this is a major bonus for us! It's supposed to be a normal winter temperature on Monday so I'll probably do some extra running around as well! The Dr's is near a Giant Tiger store so we'll pop in there to look for some curtains and pick up a few household items. I'm also hoping to get to the Quarter Master shop if possible as well because they carry organic/GF things that I can usually only order online. I'm out of my Namaste Food mixes so I've only been eating protein & veggies lately, which is all fine & dandy, but when I cut carbs my weight drops really quickly, and I'm trying not to lose any weight. When we moved to Cape Breton I dropped 10+ lbs and for those of you that know me personally, you know I can't really afford to lose 10lbs.

Money, money, money! I've been trying to figure out our new budget but without any sort of income coming in yet, it's just not possible. So I'm trying to keep spending to a minimum and we'll hopefully be able to have some sort of budget in place for February. The heat is set to 20c, but is going off non-stop in this cold, and I'm trying to get used to running stuff only in the evening hours after 7pm. I do miss that about Nova Scotia, no stupid "time of use" crap. I'm paying off the last of our Nova Scotia bills with just one more final cell phone bill waiting for us I believe, but that should pop up in my inbox sooner than later.

I paid our movers which was a hugely gross amount, and that tidy payment made our bank account look mighty sad. We are definitely needing to get our income streams going again but I'm trying not to stress and having faith that we'll make it work as we always have. Hard work is a good thing!

Meal planning! With sticking to a tight budget comes menu planning, which I'm honestly horrible with and generally slack off after a bit, but I do know it's one of the very best ways to keep our grocery budget in line. With a few of us having food allergies, it will always cost us more to feed our family than it would a family who can eat anything at all, but having a menu plan will definitely help all the same!

I'm thinking about having some "meal themes" for Dh & kids that I can shove different meals into and was hoping my readers could help me with ideas! Keeping in mind that none of us are vegans, nor do we want to eat beans & rice every night. In fact, beans are out as I'm allergic and nobody else likes them.

Here are my "themes" for meals and I'm sure I'm missing many!

  • Soup & sandwiches - self explanatory
  • Breakfast for dinner - BLT's, pancakes/waffles & sausage, quiche, (nobody eats cereal here unless it's the girls for a dry snack)
  • Pasta night - spaghetti & garlic bread, ummm... yah, not very creative here either apparently.
  • Casserole night - I generally don't make casseroles so I'll definitely need suggestions & ideas here!
  • Roasted "meat" night with all the fixin's - Whichever meat is on sale (Chicken, Pork, Beef) with potatoes, veggies, gravy & buns.
  • Pizza night - self explanatory.
  • Mexican night - tacos, ummmm ??

And at that, I can't think of anymore!!

Can you add any "Meal Themes" or meal suggestions to my list?
